This book sounds interesting. I’ve told myself that I’m over-saturated with Tudor novels, but not having read anything about Katherine Gray, and since I’ve never heard of the other lady-in-waiting, I think I could get interested in The Virgin’s Daughters. Thanks for the giveaway. I subscribe to your blog through Google Reader.

    • I’ve been wondering about this book - from your review, I think I would like it. I haven’t found many books about Elizabeth that I like - really the only one has been Susan Kay’s Legacy (which I highly recommend!). You would think that a woman who was so fascinating would have better books written about her! I follow your blog through Google reader.

    • Your review reveals the multi-faceted Elizabeth I; not only a female monarch, but one who is termed “Virgin Queen.” How sad that she was unable to accept other women’s ability to love in a manner that it appears she was not. It would be interesting to read, as you mentioned, how this “singularity,” affected her personality. Glad to hear there is not too much romance; especially in historical fiction.

Would love to win this book. Great review; really reinforces my desire to read this book.

I am fascinated with The Virgin Daughters. My interest in historical fiction began many years ago when I started reading other novels and I was captivated with this era and the character. The court and the Grey sisters amid this period sounds enthralling and a unique approach to this subject.

    • I’ve always been interested in historical fiction, and the whole court drama and intrigue thing, but I’ve not read a lot of books pertaining to England. I’m a fan of the Tudors (the show), of course, but haven’t picked up a good book about it yet. I’ve often wondered about Elizabeth and if she were bitter about never marrying, or why she never married, so this sounds like it would be an interesting read because, as you said, in this book Elizabeth doesn’t want to see other women happily in love when she isn’t.

I love historical fiction! I’m normally more drawn to historical novels about more “everyday” people, but I enjoy books about the British monarchy almost as much. This book interests me because it seems to pull those two things together. I’ve read more about Elizabeth than any other British monarch, so I think a new perspective on her would be wonderful.

      Sounds like a great book.

    • I am a sucker for anything that has to do with Elizabeth. Have been since I first watched the movie Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett. I have devoured everything I can get my hands on and while there have been a few not so good moments, I can honestly say I don’t regret my love for all things Elizabeth. I would be honored by being entered to win this book.

I have always been interested in history as long as I can remember. My great cousin took me to see Mary Queen of Scots. Ever since then I always loved the Tudor, Elizabethean age. Just recently I am now interested in France, the French Revolutionary era history. Ever since I took a class, Western Civ and learned about French history. I am enjoying that too. You just can’t get me away from historical fiction. I just started reading historical fiction. I am just finished Lady Elizabeth by Allison Weir. I just enjoy reading the era of Henry the 8th, and his wives, and children, and the relations, that he lived in. Because all his relations have a story to tell. All of the countries during that time are all related to each other, somehow to each other. my email is bookmark 60 at hotmail dot com. I have you on my blog roll. I will attempt to become a follower sometimes I have a hard time becoming a follower.

    • I’m the daughter of a history teacher and a woman who loves historical fiction so I was raised to love the genre as well. It’s hard to find historical fiction these days that isn’t too focused on the romancey piece or all about the lust. This sounds like one I would definitely enjoy!

    • Are you kidding? I’m Tudor crazed! I read everything I can on Henry VIII and his kids. Elizabethan? Can we say I’m interested in a strong woman monarch, in promotion of the arts, in religious changes and turmoil, in the Spanish Armada, in England’s rise in the world…. Yes, I want to read about the Elizabethan era.

I have always been fascinated by Elizabeth and her sister. I have read many books about Elizabeth that tell her story. This book comes at her life from a different perspective and I am curious if the portrayal of Elizabeth enhances her image and persona.

    • I’ve come to love historical fiction - a new love, which means I have a huge spectrum to choose from! Maybe it’s time to move on from the Tudors…
      Shakespeare’s time can’t be unintersting!

I love to read historical fiction because it allows me to escape back in time & learn what it was like. It also shows me that some things are still the same no matter what time period is considered.

I enjoy reading historical fiction because I’ve always been fascinated by history (history major in college) but with a closer look at the characters’ lives. Historical fiction gives the author and reader a chance to extrapolate into people’s lives and motivations. The Elizabethan period was rich - not just the time of Shakespeare, it also had much politics and intrigue. From the rivalry between Elizabeth and Mary Tudor of Scotland, to Elizabeth’s childhood and her relationship with Queen Mary, to Elizabeth’s love life - there is so much to be interested in.

Please count me in - this book sounds great!
