Audiobook Tasks – Audiobook Week Discussion

Today’s prompt:

What do you do while you listen? Any particular tasks or games that you find amazing for audio time?

As I said on Monday, this spring and summer I’ve been doing a lot of yard work and long walks with the babies while listening. One thing I’m always on the lookout for, though, are more games to play on my (Android) phone while I listen. When I’m too tired to actually read, I like to lay around and listen to my audiobook and play a game. The games have to be interesting enough to keep my attention, but they cannot have anything to do with words or require too much concentration or I’ll lose track of where I am in the audiobook. I’m posting screenshots of a few of my favorites, and I hope that you all will leave some suggestions in the comments today.

Simplz Zoo

Airport Mania

Mayan Kuma

I tend to play these on a rotation. My current favorite it Flood it, but for some reason it won’t let me take screenshots. Do you ever listen and play games on your phone? If so, what games?

  • I haven’t tried any of those games! I’ll have to check out Flood It. The only one I play is Candy Crush. I know what you mean about word games being a distraction when you’re listening.

  • Bob

I used to play Madden football while listening, but since I don’t have a game consol anymore and my computer doesn’t seem to handle games well, I have found other things to do. Sometimes I will play Androminion on my phone which is the Android version of the deck building game Dominion. Once you learn what the cards do, you can play on autopilot.

  • I don’t play any games while listening…never really got into them.

  • I haven’t gotten into any of the games that are wordless and mindless enough for me to be able to listen to audiobooks while playing them, or that I’ve spent enough time with to play them on auto-pilot. I guess I only like games that have words! It’s a good idea, though, and would keep me from stressing out over time “wasted” playing games. (I’ve pretty much given them up for that reason, because they aren’t a good way for me to relax anymore!)

  • Nice! The only game I have played while listening to audio is Mahjohn tiles on Facebook. Matching up pieces into pairs and listening work well together 😉

  • You might like elemental and temple run.

  • For me, audiobook time isn’t it’s own time. It’s just meant for when I’m doing other things like driving, running, cleaning.

    • Mostly I’m the same way, just those times when I’m too tired to do anything including read, or the times when I’m too tired to do anything and REALLY want to keep going in my audiobook.

  • But I do like Flood It! That’s one of my airplane games (one of the only times I play any).

  • Have you tried SUGAR CRUSH SAGA. It’s free and I am sooo hooked on that game. I can’t listen to anything and play a game. So jealous.

  • Oooh I love playing Flow. I never thought to play it while I listen!

  • I wish I could do that but I can’t seem to focus on a game and an audiobook at the same time. I can only perform auto-pilot duties while listening. Is Dragonvale available for Android? I love that game and those baby dragons..

  • Same as Michelle– I listen while I drive, run, clean, do yardwork, etc. Sometimes, if the book is really, really good, I will knit or will go LOOKING for housework to do while I listen!

  • I can’t play games while I listen, which is probably just as well – then I wouldn’t get anything else done.

  • For some reason I’m having troubles viewing pictures on self-hosted WP blogs lately (though I think this is limited to my work PC) so I can’t see your screen shots. If Candy Crush isn’t one of them, my sister loves loves loves that game and both she and her husband would recommend it. Probably why I don’t keep games on my phone (something about being at a restaurant with a bunch of adults playing games on iphone!). I’ve never tried to play games while listening–usually I try to multitask while listening otherwise I get too restless.

    • That’s really weird, because I don’t even host my pictures on my blog! I played Candy Crush on Facebook for awhile (before it got really big, I’m such a hipster), but it never seemed to work as well on my phone. Maybe I should try it again.

I’m usually driving while listening to audio books. They save my sanity on my 140mi/day commute.

  • I don’t think I’ve ever tried to play a game while listening to a book. I might have to try! I think Flow would be a good place to start. Thanks!

  • I don’t listen to audiobooks or play games on my phone. I might give audiobooks a try one day.
