Welcome to Saturday Story Spotlight, my feature where I discuss books my husband and I are reading with our son, Daniel. These are books that he, we, or all of us particularly enjoy.
Blue Hat, Green Hat by Sandra Boynton
Published by Little Simon, an imprint of Simon & Schuster
We’re really big on colors around here right now, so I picked up Blue Hat, Green Hat for Daniel thinking it would be something similar to Will You Wear a Blue Hat? in that the colors would be the main focus of the book. This turned out not to be the case, but like every Boynton book, what we did get was well worth having.
The elephant, deer, and bear are showcasing their colorful wardrobes, wearing hats, followed by shirts, pants, coats, socks, and shoes. The turkey wants to join in their fashion show, but he can’t quite figure out how to wear the clothes correctly, putting the hat on his feet, the pants on his head, the socks on his wings. As a result, every page reads something like this: “Blue hat, green hat, red hat, oops.” Finally the turkey figures it out and assembles a complete and correct outfit but, alas, he wears said outfit to dive into a pool. “Oops.”
As it turned out, Blue Hat, Green Hat had even more to it than I was looking for. Not only is it a good use of color, we also get clothing vocabulary, and can even start a discussion of why what the turkey was doing was an “oops” and how we wear different articles of clothing. Amazing what Sandra Boynton can do in 7 words per page.
