I was disappointed by this book too. I read the print version, but I can imagine that listening to it wouldn’t solve any of the problems. I loved the first chapter set in Korea, but was bored by the modern section. I agree that the search for the son felt contrived. Such a shame as I had high hopes for this book.

I’m not sure I’ll give this one a try, but if I do, I’m going with print. I don’t always have a problem jumping in time on audio, but sometimes the visual cues can really help.

Hi, I came here by way of twitter. Had to comment because I agree about the structure and dialog in THE SURRENDERED. I enjoyed the flashbacks to June’s childhood and how her life intertwined with Hector’s. I was disappointed because I loved Chang-Rae Lee’s other novels (other than ALOFT, which I haven’t read yet).

Bleh. This would probably be a tough one in print, but can be aggravated by an audio version. I’ve heard audios with lots of characters, but when well done, it can work.

I have that same problem with audios. I also have trouble with them if there are too many characters involved, since I can’t flip back to figure out who they are.

There are a handful of books that I feel only publisher’s or the likes can fully summarize. I don’t think that this is my cup of tea, but I love the cover!
