When Betsy and Tacy and Tib talked about their future they planned to be writers, dancers, circus acrobats. Betsy certainly had no wish at all to settle down, but just the same she hoped she would see Tony’s face if she walked down the cellar steps backward holding a mirror tonight.

Aww, little girl rituals. How sweet!
My teaser is over here.

I had never heard of some of these rituals! Of course, they’re from the turn of the last century, so that could be why…

OK, this is too, too weird. While I didn’t read that part, I was just reading “Heavens to Betsy” last night! I actually wanted to read “Betsy’s Wedding,” but it wasn’t on the bookshelf — must be elsewhere in the house. SO I turned to Betsy and her freshman year in high school. I love those books. They’re among my all-time favorites (obviously!)
OK, my actual teaser is in a different century and a world away. Mine is from a fun book about the Nobel Prize experience, “Reindeer with King Gustaf,” by Anita Laughlin. Her husband (a Stanford physics prof — obviously very brainy!) won the prize in 1998, and she writes a great book about what comes after the fateful call. At one point, describing the party, she mentions the decorations made of bamboo that look like little sticks of dynamite, in honor of Alfred NObel himself. For some reason, I just really like that.) The book is funny and candid, and Bob (the winner) even drew cartoons that reflect his own responses to the chapters. It really humanizes a very protocol-laden ceremony and experience.
This is from page 22: [[Todd shuffled sleepily into our dark bedroom, jiggled Bob’s toes, and said: “Dad, there’s some guy on the phone from Sweden. Can I go back to bed now?” Bob sat bolt upright and groped for the phone in the dark.]]
What a phone call that would be!

I *love* the Betsy books. My mom gave them to me after I finished the Little House books as a kid and we read them together. (She read them when she was a kid, my grandma read them with her, it’s a sweet family tradition that I’m hoping to continue if I have a daughter one day.)
Is this your first time reading them?

It is! Evidently nobody in my family knew about them at all. I’ve asked my mom and both of my grandmothers this week and NONE of them have ever read them. I’m really enjoying it though.

Oh, I’m so excited you found them!
I still have these perfect memories of scenes from the books. And I definitely wound up trying some of their rituals/tricks. I remember sticking watermelon seeds to my forehead, naming them boys in my class, and seeing who I would marry by which seed stuck the longest.
