I like collecting things, but I never collect anything I can’t use, and rare books are for the shelves, not to be read. I’m not completely sold on this book yet, but I’ll flip through it next time I’m at the store or library.

Great review – this sounds like an interesting book (I wouldn’t mind stumbling on a $5 garage sale book and finding out it was rare!) I feel the same way you do about collections, too – every time I’ve tried, I’ve ended up “playing” with whatever I was collecting. I do the same with “good” dishes. I can’t resist using them for every day.

I share your assessment that I’m glad the thief focused his obsession on something benign like stealing rare books and not “women’s heads” or something horrible. And I don’t understand obsessive collectors either … but I know they are out there.

The reviews for this book seem to be all over the place, but I still want to give it a try.
