I’m looking for an e-reader that is easy to use, with a BIG harddrive that can hold lots of books. I usually read paper books, so we need to be discrete, I’d love a reader I could just slip into my purse and pull out for those special moments when I’m alone. If I can get my library books on you, or even audio books, so much the better. Proprietary readers need not apply. If you’re interested call 555-READ, or email me at devourers.books(at)gmail.com
Okay, so the above is sort of silly, but it really does detail what I’m looking for in an e-reader. I’m not particularly interested in the Kindle because of the strict proprietary nature of the device. Actually, until really rather recently, I wasn’t interested in getting an e-reader at all. I mean, I have SO MANY paper books on my shelves that I haven’t even read once, why get a device that would require me to get NEW books or new copies of the books I have to read them?
Maybe I’m just a shameless follower, but I’ve started to covet an e-reader lately. Part of it is that people I know have started getting – and loving! – them. Part of it is the movement towards e-ARCs, and the fact that my library has ebooks that can be checked out. I’m not sure that I will ever buy a ton of e-books, but I’d love to have an e-reader for review copies, library books, and to lighten my carry-ons when I fly.
I’m still researching readers to see which one I’d like, and after yesterday’s guest post on the BBAW blog from the CEO of IREX, I have one more to add to my list to check out.

Jen, I do believe this is going to win for creativity girl. Hilarious! Love it!! And I know what you mean about all the books I have that I haven’t even read once yet…
I’m glad you enjoyed it, it was a very rare moment of creativity.
I too am coveting an e-reader. At book club today, one of the ladies graciously passed around her Kindle – and I liked it. But like you, I’m looking for something less proprietary – and maybe less expensive.
So clever! Wish I’d thought of it…
You really tickled my funny bone with this one! Great post!
This might be the best titled post I have ever read!
Good luck!
LOL!!! Too funny. But you’re right. I love that my eReader will work with the library.
I saw part of this pop up o twitter and I was wondering whose ad it was. LOL. I was on the train yesterday and standing between two people who were both on e-readers. I’m not feeling the tug just yet, but more and more people seem to be definitely making the leap.

I got a Kindle about two weeks ago. I was a little ambivalent about the purchase (esp. for the proprietary reasons you mentioned), but the 30-day trial prompted me to give it a whirl.
I’M SO GLAD I DID. I lovelovelovelovelove my kindle. And, I think the proprietary format is only temporary; I bet Amazon changes that after a bit, much like Apple did with the mp3s. (If not, I’m sure a hack will eventually be made available…at least, I hope.)
I use my Kindle for books that I don’t want to give shelf space to, or pay full price for. I’ve had it for about 3 weeks, have not yet needed to recharge it, and am already working on my fourth book. I am so glad I did it!

I’ve got a Kindle and I love it. Some hate Amazon, and resent being a slave to them, but I’m not feeling the least bit used. I did a post on this earlier, where I compare the Kindle with the Sony. Check it out:

Very, very creative post! I love it! I have a Kindle and thought I’d never use any other eBook. But, I seem to be wanting a book wherever I go and I don’t always carry the Kindle with me. I have been using Kindle on the iPhone, but recently discovered the Stanza, an iPhone app that provides a really nice interface for eBooks. Since I am also a “devourer of books,” I’ve even broken down and started reading on the laptop. I didn’t ever think I’d enjoy eBooks so much. I’ve been old fashioned and use to print everything first. But, you can teach an “old dog” new tricks! Books are books and you just can’t get enough input.
Great blog post. I can’t wait to share this with my fellow eReaders! (~Claudia)
You’re silly, Seastar.
I love my kindle and I never thought I’d be an e-reader. I checked some other e-readers but The Kindle really seemed to be the best for me. I’ve had it for several months and no problems. I love being able to buy a book at midnight! But I still love my paperbooks and will never give those up.
Well, you have ruined it for me. I can’t even begin to come up with a post that original. LOL Great writing. I love it!
I do have a kindle and don’t really feel trapped by ordering from them. The wireless anytime, anywhere connection sold me on it. I love it. I need another e-reader though because my daughter does too!
Really funny!
I too have been coveting an e-reader. Maybe I need to start dropping hints for my birthday…
I have a Kindle and I love it … and I’ve found that you can download other books from other sources like from Project Gutenberg. You can also send them files to convert for you (some restrictions) so don’t totally count it out. But there are more and more out there to choose from.
What a great post! I would love an ereader that does everything you said, but I could never have come up with such a fantastic way of saying so. =)

I’m slowly leaning towards getting an ereader too, but don’t really want to get the Kindle either. I want something that will work with the library.
Sony Reader! Works with NetGalley and Overdrive @ the Library, and is very compact and has a huge hard drive with a memory card expansion slot. I LOVE IT!

This had me cracking up! I am in the same room with my sister and we’re watching TV (okay, her more than I) and I busted out laughing during a hostage scene on NCIS. She looked at me like what is wrong with you? lol Then I read her your “ad” and she cracked up too.
