I loved this book so much when I read it years ago. I finished reading it and immediately turned around and read it aloud to my husband because I wanted to share it with him.

Beth F, things are not much better for women academics now. I identified with Martha all the way through...but I liked this book so much I picked up some of her others (luckily, only at the library) and found that she's moved on to outer la-la land.

This sounds like a very thoughtful memoir. I think it will be one to consider reading as someone who might be in a similar situation (grad school and having babies).

Interesting story and sounds like it has a lot to discuss! Great review on this one.

I'm in graduate school just now, and I'd love to get pregnant, but we're worried about the balance. Perhaps I ought to visit this book, perhaps it will give me confidence.

As I was reading your synopsis, I wondered if it was a true story. This is just the type of memoir I love - one that will make you think. Great review.

In the 1970s and 1980s, it was really difficult to be a woman in graduate school. You had to fight hard to get grants and to get attention from the department you were in. You had to be twice as good as the men. No one wanted to help you or invest in you because "you were just going to get married and have babies and quit academia anyway."

I haven't read this book, but it is describing an era in which this happened: One of my professors was pregnant. She worked until she went into labor and took exactly 2 days off. If she had taken more, she would have jeopardized her chances of getting tenure. I sincerely hope things are better for women now.
