I think pregnancy books are definitely a niche market.

I read Guns, Germs, and Steel–that was a good book.

I have a book of baby names that I used to peruse quite regularly. I had a thing for naming all of my stuffed animals when I was younger. My niche is much less obvious an I’m not really sure qualifies as a niche, considering I don’t read so much of those unusual or specific topic books. Of those I do read a lot of on a particular topic, so many others read them too.

When I was pregnant (four years ago!) I read a ton of books on pregnancy, childbirth, baby care and breastfeeding- those titles you mention are very familiar! While researching my debut novel, THE DAY THE FALLS STOOD STILL, I read a lot of non fiction, sticking mostly to a couple of niches – grief and Niagara Falls. I read pretty mainstream stuff (Joan Didion’s A YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING, C.S. Lewis’s A GRIEF OBSERVED, Karen Armstrong’s THE SPIRAL STAIRCASE: MY CLIMB OUT OF DARKNESS) and also the obscure (Andy O’Brien’s DAREDEVILS OF NIAGARA, The Kiwanis Club of Stamford, Ontario’s NIAGARA FALLS, CANADA: A HISTORY OF THE CITY AND THE WORLD FAMOUS BEAUTY SPOT). All of it was endlessly fascinating, particulary for a gal born and bred in Niagara Falls, ON.
