My answer is the same as yours, and for pretty much the same reasons.

What matters to me is whether I'll venture into another book of a new author (or new "old" author) if I didn't enjoy the first. It's about building the credit. I do believe in second chances. :)

I'm extra cautious about reading another if the author is not good in my book. At least I wouldn't buy it but borrow it.

Expectation is a huge factor. Once I have liked a book, my expectation mounts. Whether the author is my favorite or not, I'll be bummed out if the book doesn't hit the mark.

I read 4 Picoult books after My Sister's Keeper before I stopped reading her books all together. It wasn't that I hated the books, they just weren't as good as My Sister's Keeper.

I completely agree with your assessment! The first case is worse because you wind up reading more disappointing books than in the second case. And if I really love a book then I will often do as you and keep giving the author more chances, even if none of the other books really do it for me. But as to how many shots I'd give an author to prove themselves, it's so hard to say! I suppose I always leave the door open for them to crank out something really great that will knock my socks off... you just never know.

I also keep reading the author, in part because I go out and get the backlist after liking the one I read. Even if I hate the subsequent books, I usually stick with them because of the familiarity, I guess, or because I have made the commitment. And you're right, I think we all want to recapture the sense of awe we first felt!
