btt pictureI recently got new bookshelves for my room, and I’m just loving them. Spent the afternoon putting up my books and sharing it on my blog . One of my friends asked a question and I thought it would be a great BTT question. So from Tina & myself, we’d like to know “How do you arrange your books on your shelves? Is it by author, by genre, or you just put it where it falls on?”

Sorry about the strikeout above, but that was driving me crazy.

My bookshelves used to be a paragon of orderliness.  They made perfect sense to me and were separated by subject or genre, author, etc.  That worked well for me for awhile, particularly when I was mostly rereading books and didn’t have a huge pile of unread books.  I did notice that many of my books that WERE unread were being passed over in favor of more familiar books.  When I started getting a number of books to review, I decided I had to keep them separate so that they would not get overlooked.  After that I started putting all my TBR books together so I could browse that shelf if I wanted something.  Now I have 2 bookcases of TBR books, both double stacked and 2 bookcases of books I’ve read, also double stacked.  Any semblence of organization is out the window, other than read vs. unread.  Similar books do tend to end up together and I generally know approximately where to find any book I’m looking for, so I guess it all still works out okay.

Do you organize your bookshelves, or does chaos rule?

  1. My books are all mixed in together and pretty much everywhere. I try to keep the book that I will be reading soonish and the new arrivals on the bookshelf in my bedroom.

  2. I’m an organizer at heart with too little space, unfortunately. I probably have about two bookcases of TBR books stacked on my floor, LOL.

  3. Mostly organized, but beginning to get a bit out of hand with the unread stacks sprawling across the floor.

  4. I have a system that only I understand. I have a small bookcase with 2 stacks around it.

  5. Well, I try to keep mine organized, but my cat has this new trick where she jumps behind the books and pushes them out on the floor. So the lower shelves are pretty disorganized now…

  6. lol-I have no semblence of organization either. Mine are currently a disaster.

  7. I’m fairly organized but I’ve had some times in the past where I wasn’t so. I hope it doesn’t blow over again in the future! :D

  8. I am sort of doing Creation in reverse…God created order out of chaos…I am creating chaos out of order.

Once I had a plan. Too many books and too little shelf space did that idea in.
I have given up all sense of order where my books are concerned. I am just going to let them run free…lol

  9. I shelf my books by author’s last name in alphabetical order. For fiction and literature, I single out the ones to be re-read and put them on a different case.

New books I just bought would be emptied onto my desk so there would be no semblance of any order. :)
