Tuesday Thingers: Gold Medal Reading

Today’s question: Awards. Do you follow any particular book awards? Do you ever choose books based on awards? What award-winning books do you have? (Off the top of your head only- no need to look this up- it would take all day!) What’s your favorite award-winning book?

I have really not paid attention to awards won by books I have read as an adult.  As a child and again when I was an elementary school teacher, I actively looked for winners of both the Caldecott and Newberry Awards.

Based on this question, though, I think I might start paying a little more attention (particularly once I get through a few more of the books I need to review).  I have changed around my normal viewing style on my library so that I am seeing the awards column instead of my review column.  I haven’t taken time to look through the whole thing, but I think I might have to join an award challenge in the new year.

Somewhat unrelated:

I have a little ‘housekeeping’ to do here, a few things to mention.

  • First, if you don’t know, I was nominated for ‘Best General Book Blog’ as part of Book Blogger Appreciation Week.  If you enjoy reading my blog, please go vote for me here.  Even if you aren’t sure if you want to vote for me, please check out the other contestants.  Some of my favorite blogs are nominated for a variety of categories.
  • Second, I am currently giving away a copy of “The Heretic’s Daughter.”  Rules for entry are here, but you must actually enter on my review.
  • Lastly, The Literate Housewife just posted her 100th review and she is having an amazing contest where you can win up to 11 books!  Click here for details.

  • I read Wrinkle in Time and Julie of the Wolves. That’s the extent of my seeking out award winners.

  • I was aware of awards as a child as the teachers and librarians pointed them out. I am more aware as an adult now and as an avid reader as I like to see what books fall into certain awards categories. I often like the Booker and Orange Prize winners so follow those.

Congrats on the nominations for BBAW and good luck!!

  • I feel similarly – I look for award books for my kids, but I don’t seek them out for myself. My “your library” display on LT does show “Common Knowledge: award and honors”, but I look at that more as an “FYI” than a goal.
