I don't think it's the kind of kid book that many adults will fall in love with, but I do think that it's target audience (8-12 year olds) will really enjoy the series. As to the thing about reading book 2 - I really hate starting a series mid-stream. Usually you can still get the gist of it, but I feel like you miss something. It's like getting to the theater 10 minutes after the movie starts. You can usually figure out what's going on, but it's not the same as actually being there. The first book was pretty good.
