You are right about having opinions of what people look and sound like when you’ve never met them in person. It could be good or bad or eh… I laughed and laughed the first time I talked to Danny on the phone. He didn’t have the Dukes of Hazzard southern accent I imagined and it gave me the giggles.

It’s hard not to make mental pictures of people we meet online, unless we see actual pictures- like of you in your wedding dress! I pictured you with darker hair- don’t ask me why lol.

With people that I first met online and then met in RL I have found very little strangeness involved in the meeting. It all really comes down to the person involved though…the more you get to know someone the less weird it feels meeting them in RL. I’ve met a few LTers and hope to meet more in the future.

My really good friend C I first met online and I met her for the first time face to face over in London. It was like reuniting with an old friend. =)

I was cracking up at your title … I no longer ask my 12-yr-old to decipher “text speak” for me, I google it so as not to embarrass either of us!

I always post when I’m planning to go to an author event, thinking that maybe some LTer or book blogger will write back, “me too, see you there”. So far, no meetings, but then again, I’m not putting myself “out there”either (a definite “eh”!)

I think a meet-up would be fun, especially if there were some planned events – book swaps, author talks, etc. So far, I’ve only come across one blogger in my area. I know there have to be more because I live in a fairly large area.

From my experience, meeting people that you know really well online is only strange for about five seconds, and then it’s like you’ve known each other forever.

Also, I hate that commercial!

I feel the same way about worrying that my mental images of everyone wouldn’t match up with how they are in real life.

And I was just talking about that “IDK, my BFF Jill” commercial last night with a friend. He’s a teacher, and one of his colleageus texted another one using the abbreviation WTF. She had to ask her 13 year old daughter what it meant!
