Tuesday Thingers – Bookstores

tuesdaythingers pictureWhat’s your favorite bookstore? Is it an online store or a bricks-and-mortar store? How often do you go book shopping? Is your favorite bookstore (or bookstores) listed as a favorite in LT? Do you attend events at local bookstores? Do you use LT to find events?

Don’t forget to check out my “Far World: Water Keep” contest.  The book was fantastic and I would love for you to read it too!
Due to BookMooch and Advance Readers Copies being sent to me, I haven’t done much book shopping lately.  This is probably a good thing, because my two TBR shelves have turned into a TBR bookshelf, which is now threatening to collapse under the weight of book piles.

That being said, my favorite place to go and browse is Half Price Books.  I like to take my huge wishlist and meander up and down the aisles.  I love Half Price Books because of their dedication to the environment, literacy programs, and the local community.  Also, although they’re a chain, they’re a small chain and not a big box store.  Plus, for awhile there, the guys in there all knew me.

I only move from Half Price Books to Borders, Barnes and Nobles, or Amazon (generally) if there is a specific book I need for book club, theme read, etc that I cannot find at Half Price Books, or if I have a gift card.  Of course, I generally come away with more than I intended to.

The bookstores in my area do not actually seem to have very many events, unless you count the occasional sale.  I will, however, be (hopefully) going to an event at a bookstore in a few weeks.  This is an event I learned about on LibraryThing, but only because someone who works for Algonquin Books is on LibraryThing and shared their list of author events.  Ariel Sabar, author of my favorite book in May, “My Father’s Paradise,” (see my review) will be at a bookstore in Chicagoland in September and I’m planning to go and try to see him.
