You can definitely just read the one, although "The Virgin's Lover," in my opinion, isn't as good as "The Other Boleyn Girl" and "The Queen's Fool."

You know what, I've actually read about the Elgin marbles (and some of his other art stealing endeavors) when I was really into art history in high school...this book actually sounds really interesting, Nen; I can't believe you have made a book with a picture of a painted lady (usually a big book turn-off for me) appealing to me...p.s. I picked up a Phillipa Gregory book at SPCA the other day, The Virgin's Lover...do I have to read those books in order, or can I just read the one?

I think part of my problem was that I got a bit annoyed with Mary in the middle when I had figured out her husband and she hadn't yet. I have to agree that it worked much better than "The Aviary Gate." I'm also almost positive that this was Essex's first dual time period novel, and I imagine that it is difficult to find a good balance. If she writes another, I'm all over it!

I didn't feel that it dragged, but perhaps that's because I really liked Mary. I actually liked that more of the book was given over to her rather than to Aspasia, although I did like Aspasia too. I think in regard to the dual time periods, I was mostly just happy to have something that was far better than The Aviary Gate!

Thank you for this thoughtful review. I don't need another book right now that drags anywhere. I'll still keep the idea of it close to my TBR list, but it's always good when one of those can be shelved for later.
