BTT: Libraries

Whether you usually read off of your own book pile or from the library shelves NOW, chances are you started off with trips to the library. (There’s no way my parents could otherwise have kept up with my book habit when I was 10.) So … What is your earliest memory of a library? Who took you? Do you have you any funny/odd memories of the library?

I don’t have a lot of specific memories about the library, although I know we used to go quite often when I was young – before 3rd grade, I would say.  I do remember a couple of things, however.

When I was in 2nd grade or so, my very favorite book in the entire world was evidently “Where the Red Fern Grows.”

I would literally check this book out of the library every other time we went.  We should have just bought it!  Recently, in a fit of nostalgia, I got it through Bookmooch, although I haven’t had a chance to read it yet.

I also remember one time, I have no idea what grade I was in, my whole class at school walked to the library, probably a 2-3 mile walk.  We were told not to check out more books than we could carry back.  Yah.  As if I listened to that.  That was a long, hard walk home for an elementary school student.

  • I have never read that book. I know of it but just never read it.

  • I also had to carry the books during a long walk home, but I never regretted having them to read once I arrived at my destination.

  • I’ve ended up owning pretty much all of the books I checked out from the library and enjoyed because otherwise I’d do the exact same thing. I just want to have the opportunity to read them again whenever I want, although with my TBR pile, it seems unlikely.

  • I used to check out The Hardy Boys books, then would later buy them.
But earliest memory might be checking out books that had an accompanying record so you could read the story along with a narrator.

  • I loved this book!!! Did you ever see the movie made from it?? It was good too!!

  • I also really liked Where the Red Fern Grows. I didn’t know there was a movie of it! Have you read this other book he wrote, Summer of the Monkeys? I think it’s just as good.
