Tuesday Thingers – Why LT?

Post 99!!

Why LT?

Why did you choose to open and maintain an LT account? Do you/did you use other online cataloging/social networking sites, like GoodReads or Shelfari? Do you use more than one? Are they different or do they serve different purposes?

LibraryThing was the first of the social networking booksites I learned of. A good friend of mine told me about it and strongly insisted that I join, so that she (and others) could peruse my library. I joined and signed up for a lifetime membership immediately, simply based on the strength of the cataloging, with no idea about the social aspects. My oh-so-enthusiastic friend promptly stopped doing anything with LT at all, although she has recently re-joined.

I started plugging into the social side of LibraryThing after learning about the Early Reviewers program in order to figure out how to increase my chances of winning and was promptly addicted. I have a couple of friends who have joined GoodReads, so I keep thinking about creating an account over there as well. However, I simply don’t have the energy to update two different accounts. If I did, I’d keep my wishlist separated from my library on LibraryThing. I have also thought about joining GoodReads or Shelfari to network with more book bloggers, but I just can’t seem to get excited enough about either one to do it. Because LT is what I know, they seem like a lesser thing to me, because they aren’t LibraryThing. I’m sure that both GoodReads and Shelfari have some fun, fantastic features that LT lacks, but with Tim and ‘The Powers That Be’ as responsive as they are, I would need a whole lot more time in my schedule before plugging into other booksites would be worth it.

Thingers (and others), this is my LAST POST before the end of the contest! I will be accepting comments through 9 pm Eastern Standard Time. After that the contest will close. Three winners will be announced tomorrow, Wednesday, June 4th.

  • Yes, I love the social aspect of LT and the access to ARCs :)

  • bookroomreviews

I’ve thought about Goodreads also but I don’t have the time.

I think I joined LT and then started school and was too busy to read anything other than assigned text, and then I forgot the dang password…that’s why I’m “rabbitreader” now, silly name I know, but I’m not as clever as you are when it comes to making up names. Besides, your library is way more developed than mine will ever be, so I will always be able to find books to read from yours. I hope though, that mine can be helpful to you since you can’t everything and I’m bound to read stuff you haven’t b/c you’ve got your TBR list. I now have like 15 books TBR, but I’m not as disciplined as you, so I could read some, buy new ones, read those, then go back to ones I already have, etc…I don’t like to be held down, man :) Excited for the big contest day! p.s. I am a dork and forgot my B&N card yesterday, and I did end up going to the Target right next to it, lame!

  • They totally could have recovered your password for you, but that’s okay. Maybe you should email Lindsay there and have her delete your old account.
Also, I’m SOOO not disciplined about TBR. I can’t stop accumulating more! I even bought like 6 more in the past week! Who knows when they will all get read…

  • I joined LT because you told me I should. :) I really wish I had more time to explore it fully, though, and join some of the social aspects and groups. Maybe one day when I’m unpacked…

  • Yes, it’s nice that LT’s “powers that be” are so responsive. You don’t find that with the other cataloging sites. I like the fact that LibraryThing really feels like it’s being run by actual humans for humans!

  • The social aspect of LT is what I need to focus on next. I am good with logging my books and reviewers, but you don’t need me dragging on your social networking coat-tails forever… :)

I’m so excited for your 100th post!!!! Your site is awesome and it’s only going to get better.

I’m totally with you about not having enough time! I can’t imagine using two sites!

  • I just stumbled upon LT one day last week and found it to be awesome. I immediately added all the books that are on my bookshelf right now. I think its a great site.

  • Thanks for posting that you changed your username on LT by emailing Lindsay. I’d been wondering how to do it for a while, for the same reason that you did! You are right about the staff at LT, they are fantastic.

  • Tim et al are very prompt with fixing problems and answering questions. I think that’s one of the best parts – it shows they’re around and trying constantly to make LT an even better place. :)

  • Yes, Tim and the others actively participating on the site is one fo the attractions. It’s good to get a real response, even if it’s an explanation of why we can’t have something (collections, anyone?).

  • I started to use two sites but it was too much effort so stayed focused on LT
